عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ﴿١﴾

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ﴿١﴾
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) frowned and turned away
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ ﴿٢﴾
Because of the arrival of ‘Abdullah ibn Umm Maktūm who came asking for guidance. He was blind, and had come when the Messenger (peace be upon him) was busy with the seniors of the idolaters, hoping they would be guided
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ ﴿٣﴾
O Messenger! What do you know, maybe this blind man may be purified of his sins?
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ ﴿٤﴾
Or that he may take heed of the advices he hears from you and benefit from them?
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ﴿٥﴾
As for those who feel they have no need to bring faith in what you have brought, due to the wealth they possess. فأنت له تصد
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ ﴿٦﴾
You persevere behind them and are attentive to them. وما عليك أ ل ايز كى
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ﴿٧﴾
What blame will there be on you if he is not purified of his sins by not repenting to Allah?
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ ﴿٨﴾
As for the one who comes to you running, searching for goodness. وهو يخش
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ ﴿٩﴾
And he fears his Lord. فأ نت عنه تله
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ﴿١٠﴾
You are preoccupied from him with others i.e. the senior idolaters. بلغ Qur’an · Tafsir
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌۭ ﴿١١﴾
It should not be like that; it is only admonition and a reminder for those who pay attention
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ﴿١٢﴾
So whoever wishes to remember Allah should remember Him, and take heed of what is in this Qur’ān. فى ص حف م كرمة
فِى صُحُفٍۢ مُّكَرَّمَةٍۢ ﴿١٣﴾
Because this Qur’ān is in blessed scrolls, with the angels. م رفوعة م طه رة
مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ ﴿١٤﴾
They are raised on a high place, pure; no dirt or filth reaches them. بأ يدى سفرة
بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍۢ ﴿١٥﴾
And they are in the hands of Messengers among the angels. كرام بررة
كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍۢ ﴿١٦﴾
They are honourable in the eyes of their Lord, frequent performers of goodness and obedience
قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ ﴿١٧﴾
The disbelieving human is cursed; how severe is his disbelief in Allah! من أى شىء خلقه
مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ﴿١٨﴾
What substance did Allah create him from, that he has the right to display arrogance on earth and disbelieve in Him?! من نطفة خلقه فقد ره
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ ﴿١٩﴾
He created him from a small amount of fluid, and managed his creation in stages
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ ﴿٢٠﴾
Then after these stages, He made the exit from his mother’s belly easy for him. بلغ Qur’an · Tafsir ثم أماته فأقبره
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ ﴿٢١﴾
Then, after spending the amount of life decreed for him, Allah caused death upon him and made a grave for him wherein he remains until he is resurrected
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ ﴿٢٢﴾
Then, when He wishes, He will resurrect him for accounting and requital
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ ﴿٢٣﴾
It is not like this disbeliever imagines: that he has fulfilled the rights of Allah upon him, because he has not fulfilled the obligatory actions Allah put upon him
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ ﴿٢٤﴾
So the human who disbelieves in Allah shouldبlook at the food he eats: how did he come to acquire it?
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّۭا ﴿٢٥﴾
It originates from the rain descending from theق sky with force and in abundance
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّۭا ﴿٢٦﴾
Then, I split open the earth, so it springs forth withب plants. فأنبتنا فيها ح ا
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّۭا ﴿٢٧﴾
I then make grains grow on it, i.e. wheat, corn etc. وعنبا وقض با
وَعِنَبًۭا وَقَضْبًۭا ﴿٢٨﴾
And I make fresh grapes and fodder grow on it, so it can be feed for your livestock. وزيتونا ونخلا
وَزَيْتُونًۭا وَنَخْلًۭا ﴿٢٩﴾
And I also make olives and date palms grow on it
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًۭا ﴿٣٠﴾
I also make abundant gardens and trees grow on it. بلغ Qur’an · Tafsir ب وفكهة وأ ا
وَفَـٰكِهَةًۭ وَأَبًّۭا ﴿٣١﴾
And I make fruits grow on it, together with things your livestock graze. م تعا ل كم ولأنعمكم
مَّتَـٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ ﴿٣٢﴾
For your benefit, and the benefit of your livestock
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ ﴿٣٣﴾
So when the great shriek will come that will deafen the ears i.e. the second blowing
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ ﴿٣٤﴾
On that day a person will run from his brother. وأ مه وأ بيه
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ ﴿٣٥﴾
And he will run from his parents. وصحبته وبنيه
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ ﴿٣٦﴾
And he will run from his wife and children
لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ شَأْنٌۭ يُغْنِيهِ ﴿٣٧﴾
Each one of them will be in a state where he will be preoccupied from them due to the extreme anxiety on that day. وجوه يومئ ذ م سفرة
وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ مُّسْفِرَةٌۭ ﴿٣٨﴾
The faces of the fortunate ones that day will be bright. ضاحكة م ستبشرة
ضَاحِكَةٌۭ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭ ﴿٣٩﴾
Laughing in happiness due to what Allah has prepared for them out of His mercy. ووجوه يومئذ عليها غبرة
وَوُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌۭ ﴿٤٠﴾
And the faces of the wretched people will have dust on them on that day. ترهقها قترة
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ﴿٤١﴾
Darkness will come over them. بلغ Qur’an · Tafsir
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ ﴿٤٢﴾
Those described above in that state will be the ones who combined disbelief and transgression
